Listed below is a skillfully crafted depiction of an Ancient Traditional Khmer Apsara Dancer, etched in green Marble stone from Pursat Province, Cambodia. Located at the heart of Traditional Khmer Classical Dance is the enchanting Apsara character, whose graceful hand gestures with refined swaying movements of bodies, head, fingers and toes are so vastly intricate representing a plethora of significant meanings that it would take years of study to understand all of its underlining meanings.
The Apsara dancer plays a dominant role in Cambodian Culture, both modern and traditional, as images of her can be found throughout Cambodia and South East Asia. Adorned with gold headdresses, silken tunics, skirts and lush jewelry the Apsara character is one of the most beautiful and identifiable characters in Cambodian Dance and holds great significance for the Khmer people throughout the world. The Cambodian government for example, considers the Royal Ballet in particular to be a national treasure.
